My Role

As part of Digizoo’s internal social committee, I was tasked to create a memento for the company’s 10 year anniversary. I led this initiative in design ideation and execution, and worked with my manager in printing and putting together the cards by hand.

Project Overview

Impact

  • 65% of Digizoo employees received a custom trading card based on their survey responses.
  • 34% of Digizoo employees used their trading card illustration as their Slack profile picture.
  • It made for a fun social activity for the 10 year anniversary celebration dinner.
  • The ZooID also functioned as decoration for our plain office passes!

The Problem

The Digizoo social committee wanted to create merchandise that was truly memorable as a special memorabilia for the organisation’s 10 year anniversary. While ideating possible ideas for this, we were faced with the following limitations:

  • We wanted illustrations that were personal and depicted the likeliness of our employees, but wouldn’t accidentally offend (this ruled out caricatures).
  • The merchandise needed to appeal to our employee-base (majority male software engineers).
  • Illustration style needed to be easily repeatable taking less than one hour per employee (this ruled out traditional illustration styles as it would take too long).
  • We wanted the merchandise to feel special and be something that can be kept easily.
  • Work with a tight turnaround of 2 weeks.

Goals and Objectives

  • Allow each employee to express their unique identity.
  • Create a style that’s personalised, but repeatable and consistent in style.

The Solution

Trading cards have fun personal statistics inspired by Dungeons and Dragons

Many employees at Digizoo enjoy playing video games and are aware of the Dungeons and Dragons stats. Rather than copying the stats directly, we decided to create our own code to make the designs more unique and fun.

The final six stats were derived from a group brainstorm: Team Player (TMP), Humour (HUM), Wisdom (WIS), Caffeine Addition (CAF), Social (SOC) and Hunger (HNG).

Attributes, stats and quotes on the trading cards were collected through Microsoft Forms

Rather than creating attributes for people randomly, we wanted the trading cards to be a tool for ice-breaking. To achieve this, we asked employees to fill in the form if they wanted a customised illustration.

Outcome and Final Remarks

The ZooID cards were a highlight of the 10 Year Anniversary event for many of the employees. It was very rewarding to see everyone trade the cards and talk to each other. I had a great time working on this project.
